The history of the fishing carpets is carried and retold by many actors, yesterday as well as today. The small coastal weavers from Freest are just as responsible for maintaining an identity-forming cultural asset as the old, few weavers from Kröslin and Spandowerhagen, the custody in Greifswald and the local history museum in Freest with their extensive fishing carpet collections.
All of these and many more keep the old craft alive or have moved for generations in the living and working environment of the coastal landscape of Western Pomerania, where everyday motifs of life have made the concise pictorial language, independent in colour and form, the fishermen's carpet unmistakable.
